Dates follow the lunar calendar; confirm locally. We worked them out from the new moon in Vietnam time and checked them against published 2026 lists, but sites sometimes disagree by a day.

How the night works

Exact timings shift a little month to month. This is the usual shape of the evening.

  1. 5 pm

    Get into the old town

Walk the yellow streets and the Japanese Covered Bridge while it's still light, and pick your spot by the river before the crowds.

  2. 6–8 pm

    The lights go off

Electric lighting on the main old-town streets is switched off or dimmed, and the silk lanterns take over. Much of the old town is closed to motorbikes in the evening, so it's walkers only.

  3. After dark

    Float a lantern

Buy a paper lantern with a candle from the vendors along the river, light it, make a wish and set it on the water from the bank or from a small boat.

  4. Late

    Cross to An Hoi

The night market on An Hoi islet, just over the bridge, runs into the night, with street food and lantern stalls.

What it costs

₹1 is about 270₫ (Sep 2026). Prices are approximate and boats are negotiable.

On the night

Bring cash in small notes

  • Old town ticketFor foreign adults. It covers entry to a set of heritage houses, halls and museums.120,000₫≈ ₹445
  • Boat on the riverA short ride of about 15–20 minutes, priced per boat, not per person.≈ 150,000₫≈ ₹555
  • Floating lanternA paper lantern with a candle.10,000–20,000₫≈ ₹40–75

Lantern-making class

About 2 hours, in the old town

Family workshops around the old town teach you to build a silk lantern on a bamboo frame. Most classes make a foldable one that packs flat for the flight home.

Usually about US$9–15 per person (≈ ₹800–1,300) on booking sites. Some include tea or hotel pickup for more.

When to go

Any full moon works, but plan around the weather

February to April is usually the most comfortable: dry and not too hot.

October to December is central Vietnam's flood season. In November the old town can flood after heavy rain and boat rides can stop, so check the forecast before you go. Tet (around February) and summer bring the biggest crowds.

Getting there

Fly to Da Nang

Then 30–45 minutes by road

Hoi An has no airport. Fly into Da Nang (DAD), then take a Grab or taxi about 30 km south to Hoi An.

VietJet has flown non-stop to Da Nang from Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Check current schedules, or connect through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

Where to stay

Two easy choices

Old town: walk to the river and back on lantern night.

An Bang beach: quieter, by the sea, about 15 minutes by Grab from the old town.

From India
